This "revisited" gig at "Ohne Filter" took place in 1997 in Baden-Baden Germany. At this time (Ford's second TV guest performance on the show) his highly-acclaimed album "Tiger Walk" was ready to go. Here he shared the stage with three established musicians from Alanis Morissette's stable... |

Gig $5.48 For the last several years, the editors of Word, the pioneering Web magazine, have been sending interviewers -- nearly forty in all -- across America to talk to people about their jobs. They wanted to document reality, not to advance any overarching thesis or political agenda. Their sole position on work was that it's a fascinating topic and an elemental part of nearly everyone's life. They were certainly not disappointed with what they found; this wide-ranging survey of the American economy at the turn of the millennium is stunning, surprising, and always entertaining. It gives us an unflinching view of the fabric of this country from the point of view of the people who keep it all moving.Recalling Studs Terkel's 1972 classic best-seller, Working, the more than 120 roughly textured monologues that make up Gig beautifully capture the voices of our fast-paced and diverse economy. The selections demonstrate how much our world has changed -- and stayed the same -- in the last three decades. If you think things have speeded up, become more complicated and more technological, you're right. But people's attitudes about their jobs, their hopes and goals and disappointments, endure. Gig's soul isn't sociological -- it's emotional. The wholehearted diligence that people bring to their work is deeply, inexplicably moving. People speak in these pages of the constant and complex stresses nearly all of them confront on the job, but, nearly universally, they throw themselves without reservation into coping with them. Instead of resisting work, we seem to adapt to it. Some of us love our jobs, some of us don't, but almost all of us are not quite sure what we would do without one. With all the hallmarks of another classic on this subject, Gig is a fabulous read, filled with indelible voices from coast to coast. After hearing them, you'll never again feel quite the same about how we work. |

TAO (Jazz) - Tomorrow Night Gig $22.76 TAO is an acronym formed from the band member`s names: Tachibana/Actis Dato/Ohta.TAO: Keisuke Ohta (vocals, violin); Carlo Actis Dato (saxophone); Yasuhiko Tachibana (bass).Includes liner notes by Paul De Barros. This is a rather strange release, one that could prompt a few jazz critics to threaten to put Carlo Actis Dato in the same category as Eugene Chadbourne. Strike one: Sound quality on Tomorrow Night Gig is somehow hollow, subpar with other Leo releases. Strike two: At times this trio feels like it values kidding around over musicianship. Ideas are thrown in and out vigorously and don`t always make sense. If these elements sound negative, on the other hand the album salvages what surely was an exciting evening, completely over the top, including an enthusiastic hooting audience. The Italian saxophonist is joined by Japanese bassist Yasuhiko Tachibana and violinist Keisuke Ohta. The latter brings to the trio the strangest note, what with his fake-Arabic singing and his violin effects (reverb, volume pedal, even distortion in "Ile de Gore"). As with Chadbourne, one is often tempted to sneer at incoherent-sounding passages and odd mishaps, unless they are intentional. Take "Saharawi," for instance: a solid groove worthy of a dervish dance, but in the first minutes the bass seems to have issues with the beat -- something screaming amateurishness. And yet elsewhere Tachibana accomplishes marvelous things. So why keep the piece (it`s obvious this is not the whole concert, edits have been made, improvisations fade in and out)? Above it all reigns Actis Dato`s original spirit and sense of fun ("Red" is calypso), linking this release to his fantastic solo Moonwalker.
